Project Narrative

Problem Statement

To investigate the Lifecycle impacts of conventional flood lubrication (FL) compared to a novel solid lubrication method.

Summary

Metal machining is an enormous industry that relies on liquid, oil-based lubricants to cool the workpiece and tool. This practice is wasteful, environmentally harmful, and creates a health risk for tool operators. A cutting tool coating has been developed to eliminate FL and machine dry, as well as enabling higher machining speeds. The lifecycles of both machining processes were modeled in openLCA, then compared to prove the environemental, and economic benifits of using the new technology.
